Bus driver charged over death of suspected thief

A bus driver was yesterday charged with causing the death of a suspected thief, whom he allegedly struck off a motorcycle during a chase.

Mahendra Moonsammy, 29, of 177 Barr Street, Kitty, pleaded not guilty yesterday to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.

Moonsammy is accused of driving vehicle BRR 6950 dangerously and hitting Devon Forde’s motorcycle on January 15th, 2015, in Kitty. Forde was hospitalised and succumbed four days later.

The prosecution’s facts stated that on the day of the crime, at around 4:30AM, Moonsammy was at home when he heard his bus alarm going off. He went outside and made a check and he allegedly noticed Forde attempting to steal something from his bus.

He subsequently approached the man, who got onto a motorcycle and rode away. Moonsammy then chased after Ford in his bus and he allegedly struck his motorcycle.

Moonsammy was placed on $125,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. His next court date is June 29th, 2015 and he is required to visit the Kitty police station every Friday at 5PM as a condition for his bail release.
