Vendor stabbed to death in Sophia

A vendor was stabbed to death, while her husband was wounded when they were attacked by a former neighbour at their Sophia home on Wednesday night.

Janice Paul, 41, and her husband, Eusi Paul, 41, had just arrived at their home at ‘D’ Field, Sophia, when they were attacked by the man, who was armed with a dagger, police said in a statement.

Janice, who was stabbed about her body about a dozen times, was subsequently pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Eusi, who sustained injuries to his face and hand, was treated and discharged, the police added.

Up to yesterday, their assailant, known as “Jerry,” was still on the run.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, said the police are making an earnest effort to catch the assailant. He noted that the motive for the attack is unclear.

Stabroek News was told that Eusi had a confrontation with the attacker and his wife intervened and as a result she sustained over a dozen stab wounds. One resident said the man, who had lived near the Pauls, had moved out of Sophia on the previous day.

As his wife was being brutalised by the assailant, Eusi’s cries for help were drowned out by the heavy downpour and roaring thunder, according to residents of the neighbourhood.

Eusi eventually managed to run away and get assistance from some neighbours. Neighbours alerted the Turkeyen Police Station and Janice was rushed to the hospital.

Neighbours described the assailant as a peaceful and quiet man and they expressed shock that he would commit such a crime. They said he sold juice and peanut punch in the area.

Eusi was too distressed to speak yesterday.

A neighbour said the Pauls and two children lived at their house. They were described as very quiet.
