Alleged bandit shot dead after robbing couple near 61 beach

An alleged bandit was mortally wounded yesterday by law enforcement officers, who responded to a robbery under arms report in the vicinity of Number 61 Village beach.

The dead man is yet to be identified and is currently at the Skeldon Hospital mortuary.

Reports stated that a man and woman were walking near the Number 61 Village beach when they were pounced on by two armed men and taken onto the beach. There they were robbed of two cellular phones, $60,000 and a gold chain. Efforts to contact the couple proved futile.

Meanwhile, a community policing officer who was in the area, observed what was happening and chased after the bandits after alerting other officers to what had occurred.

According to Police Commander ‘B’ Division Christopher Griffith when the officers responded to the report, the men opened fire at them. He said the officers returned fire, fatally hitting one of the men, while the other man escaped.

According to Griffith a shotgun and two spent shells were recovered at the scene.

Police investigations are continuing.
