Local gov’t polls for early December

Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan this afternoon told the National Assembly that he has been advised that the Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) will be ready to hold the long awaited local government elections by early December.

Declaring that these elections will “wait on no one” the minister said he spoke to Gecom Chairman Dr Steve Surujbally who said that the commission will meet on August 18 when a decision would be taken for the holding of the elections. He said from the conversation he was informed that the commission can hold the elections by early December or “well before Christmas.”

The minister was at the time speaking on the second reading of the Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2015.
