An image of the suspect was obtained from surveillance footage of the murder, which was recorded by cameras installed at the Montrose house where it occurred.

One man has been held for questioning and he remained in custody yesterday.

Relatives discovered Ganesh’s body in a pool of blood in the kitchen of the bottom flat of the two-storey house on Saturday morning.

The shocking discovery was made after neighbours and relatives became suspicious since Ganesh was not seen in the yard doing her daily chores. Upon checking, relatives were greeted with a locked gate and further checks led them to her body.

The surveillance footage captured the man striking the woman to her head with a lug spanner. The killer then tied her neck with a piece of cloth and he trampled her. In the over two-hour period in which the man was in the house, he periodically trampled the woman and struck her with a spanner every time he passed her body.

The man eventually calmly walked out of the yard, scaled the fence and stood a few minutes on the road before boarding a bus heading in the direction of Georgetown. Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect is asked to contact the police on telephone numbers 225-6411, 225-8196, 225-2227, 229-2557, 229-2702, 911 or the nearest police station. All information will be treated with strict confidence, police said yesterday.
