Ex-convict urges probe of Jagdeo tenure

Consumed with a passion to work for a transformed Guyana, ex-convict Tameshwar Beekham on Friday withstood the mid-morning sun in Georgetown as he protested, calling for President David Granger to open a Commission of Inquiry (COI) into former President Bharrat Jagdeo’s twelve-year tenure.

Beekham’s demonstration of his concerns began in front of the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) Chambers at about 9:00AM, then he proceeded in front of Police Headquarters, followed by the Office of the President after which he packed up his placards at about 12:00PM.

The issues which he is hoping will attract a thorough investigation by President Granger are corruption under Jagdeo’s government, money laundering, trafficking in narcotics, racism, mismanagement and extra judicial killings; particularly with the phantom squad and Roger Khan.

The protester who travelled from Crabwood Creek, Berbice believes that the PPP/C Administration was marred with corruption and he is determined to do everything within his power to unmask this.

Beekham said that he was once a staunch supporter of the PPP/Civic but his eyes were opened to the demoralization and crookedness of the party after he was arrested and jailed for being involved for corruption while he was employed with the Berbice Anti-Smuggling Squad.

He was charged with multiple counts of fraudulent conversion and obtaining money by false pretence.

Beekham said that he was sentenced to a total of 94 years in prison for the scores of charges, but since the sentences were concurrent he was only required to serve seven years and three months.

After serving his sentence, he was freed in November 2012.
