Fire scare near High Court

Quick action by the Guyana Fire Service and a Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) emergency crew yesterday averted what could have been a serious fire when an electrical pole caught on fire along Charlotte Street, near the High Court compound.

Around mid-morning, court staffers were alerted to sparks on the pole, which later burst into a small fire that lasted for some seconds.

Chief Justice Ian Chang, attorneys and court security personnel immediately ensured contact with the fire department which saw the subsequent dispatch of a fire tender.

The firefighters kept a close watch on the pole until the GPL crew arrived shortly thereafter and intervened.

Staffers at the court said that it was not the first time that a wire had sparked, resulting in fire on the pole.

“This happens steady,” one woman remarked.

Some onlookers surmised that this occasional problem may be due to a power overload owing to the numerous businesses in the area.
