Two hurt after car slams bicycle

A collision between a car and a bicycle yesterday morning at Lamaha and East streets, Georgetown has left two persons hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).

Injured is William Nurse, 53, whose condition was listed as stable up to yesterday afternoon and Lisa Khedoo, 37, a staffer of the GPHC.

Nurse sustained head and spinal injuries while Khedoo is nursing a broken right arm and bruises about her body. Up to late yesterday afternoon, preparations were being made for Nurse to undergo a CT scan while Khedoo has to undergo surgery to her hand.

According to reports reaching this newspaper, the two injured persons live in the Queen’s College compound where Nurse has worked as a caretaker for the past 14 years. Khedoo who is from Mahaicony stays with Nurse.

Speaking to Stabroek News, Indranie (only name given), the reputed wife of Nurse said she was at home when she received a call from her son informing her of the accident. The woman said she immediately rushed to the hospital where she was able to see Nurse. She related that he was in and out of consciousness.

She related that although she was not present at the time of the accident, based on the information she received, Nurse and Khedoo left Camp Street and were heading to the market when tragedy struck. She said that information she gathered stated that the driver of the car lost control of it causing him to hit the two persons off the bicycle. They were thrown some distance.

Reports revealed that the motorcar, PNN 9 that was involved in the accident is a government- owned vehicle that is used to transport high-ranking officials.

When this newspaper arrived on the scene, the two injured persons were being hurriedly transported to the hospital while the driver who had spots of mud visible on his black suit maintained that he wasn’t driving at a fast rate. He also noted that he was on his way to State House at the time.

Traffic ranks arrived on the scene sometime after and were seen escorting the driver to the police station.
