Car story

Dear Editor,

Last Thursday morning, January 8th, at approximately 7:15hrs, I was driving along the western carriageway on the East Coast of Demerara on my way to Georgetown during a heavy downpour of rain when the driver in front of me suddenly made a left turn into the Industry area, causing me to apply brakes. As a consequence, the person behind me ran into my vehicle. We both stopped and the gentleman came towards my car and apologized and promised to have the damage repaired; we agreed to meet at my mechanic that same afternoon.

I left work at approximately 4.30pm and used the same route I usually do which is Camp Street, Carifesta Avenue, onto the Rupert Craig Highway and then the East Coast public road. As I drove across by the Celina’s Resort, a white car pulled alongside me and flashed a badge and requested that I stop. A gentleman then came to the side of my car and told me that he had just dropped a detective off at Eve Leary and that the detective did not like the way I was driving and asked him to stop me and bring me back to Eve Leary.

I told the man that I was involved in an accident that same morning and was heading to my mechanic to meet the guy who ran into my car. He went to the back of my car and made a call from his cellphone and came back alongside my car and said that the officer had said that he must see what he can do. I opened my wallet and took out $3,000 dollars and gave it to him. He then asked me if I could not make it $5,000. However I told him, that that was all the money I had on me. He then told me to be careful next time.

I drove off and when I glanced into my rearview mirror, I observed that it was not a police car and the number plate was that of a hire car [number given].

I tried getting this number traced, but was told by personnel at the Guyana Revenue Authority, that I need to make a report at the police station and get a document from them requesting the information.

This letter has been written to make others aware of pranksters.

Yours faithfully,
