First phase of Vaitarna sawmill project is complete

Dear Editor,

Below are the updates from Vaitarna Inc on log sales for the year 2014 and the status of the sawmill project.

  1. Vaitarna Holding Pvt Inc would like to offer some clarifications on a misleading article that was published in the January 20 edition of the Stabroek News, where it was alleged that Vaitarna Holding Pvt Inc was making no effort to establish processing facilities as per its agreement with the Government of Guyana, and that it was only engaged in the export of logs. The facts of the matter are that in 2014 a total of 11,464 m3 of logs were sold.
  2. Out of 11,464 m3 log sales in 2014, local sales were 5,705.26 m3 and exports were 5,758.7 m3.
  3. Additionally, the structure for the first phase of the sawmill project is complete and electrical works are scheduled to begin within a month’s time.
  4. The machines for the first phase of project have already arrived in Georgetown, Guyana and will be moved to Wineperu site for installation during the first quarter 2015.
  5. After installation, a trial run will be held to iron out any issues after which active added value production will commence.
  6. The company will sell lumber to both local and export markets depending on demand prices.
  7. Additionally two sawing machines from Wood-mizer and a resaw machine to further scale up added value production are expected to reach Guyana in the third quarter of 2015 and are expected to be operational by late 2015, early 2016.
  8. Vaitarna Holding Pvt Inc currently has 106 employees working where more than 90% are local Guyanese.

Yours faithfully,

Chethan Narayan
