Miners can represent themselves

Dear Editor,

Please allow me to respond to some mischief being peddled to agitate miners, particularly those within Region Seven, following a comment by Sherwin Downer of the Bartica Interim Management Commit-tee to the Kaieteur News’ January 25 edition.

I was taken aback when I read the comments of Mr Downer because it seems as though he is way out of his league and is making wild comments to the media without having a true appreciation of the modalities regarding toll access for various mining districts. It gives the impression that Mr Downer is of the belief that the GGDMA is not doing enough for miners and is interested in usurping the role of the GGDMA.

In this regard, I would like to say to Mr Downer that miners are adequately represented by the GGDMA and there is absolutely no need for his input as the association and miners have a clear understanding of where the sector is heading. While his premature outbursts must have excited some within the mining sector, his wild assertions are not needed.

I would like to point out that miners and their representative body, the GGDMA, are very vocal regarding their rights and responsibilities and there is no need for any other private citizen to create the impression that miners needing saving. We can represent ourselves.

Yours faithfully,
Ganesh Singh
