Members of minority groups should be in leadership positions in the political parties

Dear Editor,

Since the President announced dates for general elections in the country, all we are reading in the media is about the plans of the two rival political parties to appoint the persons who will take their parties into the election to be the president of the country.

But what is disappointing is that it seems that the two political parties are appointing only persons from the two main ethnic groups, namely, African and Indian Guyanese to be their presidential candidates.

This practice saddens me since it seems that only the two main ethic groups live in Guyana and are capable of governing and leading the country. Editor, I believe it would be good to have persons from the other minority groups in the top bracket leadership positions as well, namely from the Portuguese, Amerindians and others, so they can bring new ideas, plans and healing to the leadership of the country as the nation moves forward. They would put the development of Guyana and welfare of the people first, rather than being centered on race and securing rival political parties’ agendas as priorities.

Yours faithfully,
