With the fall in the oil price government should set minibus fares

Dear Editor,

Notwithstanding the fall in oil prices on the world market and despite Guyoil selling gas here at a cheaper price, the cost of public transportation by minibus and taxi remains the same as it was when the price was high on the world market. We also understand that the cost of oil at most of the gas stations has dropped too. Government here should intervene and set the fares for transportation by minibus and taxi. We hope it does so before some taxi and minibus owners and conductors become rich at poor people’s expense.

Early in 2014 minibus owners and operators unilaterally without any consultation with the authorities concerned hiked the fares for public transportation by 25%.

Furthermore, pensioners should now be given free bus passes to travel.

Yours faithfully,
