Beer billboard should be removed from near Girl Guides compound

Dear Editor,

I wish to bring to your attention and that of the public the total disregard for women in this country by a foreign-based beverage company.

I was appalled to see a large beer billboard mounted in the Girl Guides’ compound at the junction of Vlissengen Road and Croal Street junction while driving my car along Homestretch Avenue. It is distasteful for this foreign company to be promoting its products with the tag line “It’s a man’s Beer” in the compound of one of Guyana’s premier organisations for girls and young women.

Several local organisations have been at the forefront of instilling values in our young women, especially at a time when domestic violence, which is attributed in part to alcohol consumption, is troubling.

I am calling on the company and the Guyana Girls Guides Association to remove the billboard from its current location and hope that this business would show greater responsibility in its operations here.

Yours faithfully,
S Mahadeo (Ms)
