Crum-Ewing created the space for more citizens to take a stand

Dear Editor,

On March 24, the President of Guyana, Mr Donald Ramotar finally expressed his true views about the late Mr Courtney Crum-Ewing at a forum for the business community in Berbice. Mr Ramotar reportedly said that Mr Courtney Crum-Ewing was of nuisance value, not a threat, and that he was spreading racial comments on his Facebook page, among other things.

It was an attempt to discredit the contribution Mr Crum-Ewing made to the struggle for equal rights and justice, in Guyana.

It is also noteworthy that, during his protest in front of the Attorney General’s Office, he was reported to have been threatened by two government officials, his bus was vandalised and he was arrested for using the washroom of the Ministry of Legal Affairs.

It seems to me that, Mr Crum-Ewing was not a nuisance. He was brave Guyanese, who exercised his constitutional right to stand up and speak out against grave injustices. Notwithstanding threats against his person, this patriot was ready to face death, which eventually came by the dirty hands of those who could not face him; they shot him from the back.

They had guns but feared his bullhorn.

No amount of negative labelling by the President could diminish Mr Crum-Ewing’s stature and the importance of his work—to raise awareness about injustice in the land and the need to vote. He has created the space for many more citizens to take a stand.

I am Crum-Ewing.

Yours faithfully,
Ranwell Jordan
Former Mayor of Georgetown
