The health sector has delivered effective services

Dear Editor,

The health sector has delivered efficient and effective services to the people of Guyana, and while there is huge room for improvement, one cannot erase the evidence of a growing and progressive delivery of health care to the Guyanese people.

If one was to look at the GPHC Accident and Emergency Unit, there has been a complete transformation, despite the huge flock of people seeking medical attention.

So whatever fence we sit on in the political arena we must be realistic and sing praises where praise is deserved, as well as condemn when there are grounds to do so.

Within this context we must show our utmost regard for the hard-working and dedicated people who work relentlessly day and night to make our population healthier and well. Many times there are misconceptions regarding the services offered by our health sector, but people often have not been realistic and looked at the bigger picture. Whenever there is a death people will castigate, but when health-care providers save a life no mention or commendation is heard.

In closing we must pay homage to Minister of Health Bheri Ramsarran, his predecessor Dr Leslie Ramsammy and the long-standing CEO of the Georgetown Public Hospital Mr Michael Khan, all of whom have made tremendous sacrifices in the face of a plethora of problems.

Yours faithfully,

Andre Fortune
