Those with foreign passports should follow the constitution

Dear Editor,

It has been brought to my attention there are individuals on the recently published lists of candidates who potentially could become members of Guyana’s National Assembly, if selected according to the various criteria of the political parties who submit the names.

According to the Guyana Constitution, Article 155 (1) states that no person shall be qualified for selection as a member of the National Assembly who is by virtue of his own act, under any acknowledgement of allegiance, obedience or adherence to a foreign power or state. We cannot speak about a commitment to follow the rule of law on the one hand, and on the other violate that rule of law.

So those on the lists who have foreign passports should be ashamed of themselves, and find the courage to do the right thing, ie, follow our constitution.

Yours faithfully,

Charles L Griffith
