Mabaruma receiving a fair supply of water

Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) wishes to respond to statements published in the Stabroek News, April 15 2015, in the article titled ‘Mabaruma residents without running water since January’.

The article indicated that Mabaruma was without water supply since January 2015.

This assertion is entirely false. GWI can provide evidence that the community was receiving water during numerous visits conducted by GWI Teams, including senior management, between January and April 2015.

In fact, a GWI team consisting of water resource specialists and senior executives returned from Mabaruma on Wednesday April 15 and can substantiate that the area is receiving a fair supply of water.

GWI has consistently provided technical advice on the management of the well at Mabaruma which serves the local hospital. The recent visit by a GWI team to the community confirmed that the well is fully functioning and serving the facility despite claims to the contrary published in the media.

In fact, following publication of another Stabroek News article on April 13 which indicated that there was a ‘water shortage’ at the hospital, GWI Senior Management contacted the Regional Administration at Mabaruma which confirmed that the facility was receiving water.

It must be noted, that due to the geographical formations, residents of Mabaruma receive water from natural springs which have provided a fair supply of water. As a result, water is supplied on a scheduled basis to ensure that all residents receive a reasonable supply at particular times of the day.

GWI is exploring a number of interventions which will enhance the level of service provided to Mabaruma and surrounding communities.

The company explored the use of three boreholes but this was unsuccessful due to the rock formations. GWI also investigated the option of utilizing water from the river but it was discovered that the source contained high levels of saline which is unsuitable for consumption.

However, the company continues to investigate other sources to improve the level of service at Mabaruma including increasing the depth and width of the existing springs.

The company wishes to reiterate its commitment to enhancing the water service available at Mabaruma and other Hinterland communities. Improving water supply in the Hinterland remains a priority in the GWI Strategic Plan and management remains steadfast in ensuring these plans are implemented with the overarching aim of improving the quality of life for Mabaruma residents.
