A country seeking greater unity cannot hope to do this while it is divided on the all-important questions raised by ethnic insecurity. As the election campaigns gain momentum one former president will vigorously continue to push the so-called race card in an obvious attempt to foster disunity, fear and ethnic polarization.
We may be a poor country and we may lack the trappings of modern materialism. However, we are an intelligent and intuitive people. We recognize when we are being manipulated, abused and being taken for fools.
Guyanese know when self- serving politicians are trying to play havoc with our sense of well-being.
Although the interests of a powerful, super-rich few may be served by polarized politics, the interests of the vast majority are not. We Guyanese live well together. Different ethnic groups live peacefully side by side sharing each other’s grief and happiness. Our children and grandchildren sit side by side at school and play together. We share our bread. Our hopes and aspirations are similar if not the same. Moderation, commonsense and stability will bring our ethnic groups even closer together. We have only to make national unity our preference and passion.
There are strong and positive indications that Guyana will come good and that the elusive ‘potential’ will soon be fully within our grasp. But first we must reject the forces of division and disunity. We must drum up the courage and the power of conviction to say to all those who preach disunity and division: “Get thee behind me Satan!”
