Rotation is the name of the power game

Dear Editor,

What a game of snakes and ladders politics is − worldwide. One day you have power, the next no red boxes and no ministerial car. Following the May 7 general election in the UK we have ‘lost’ four party leaders − three in one hour! Worse than buses.

Sadly, rotation is the name of the power game, and all governments run out of ideas and vim. The Tories did in 1997 and Labour in 2010. You lick your wounds, go “off to the cricket” in John Major’s case, or to have a big sulk in Gordon Brown’ s, then regroup and offer yourself anew to the people. It often works. Look at David Cameron coming out of the ashes of three straight Tory defeats.

Plenty ladders, lots of snakes.

Yours faithfully,
John ‘Bill Cotton/Reform’ Mair
