I am encouraged that President Granger has a code of conduct that the ministers of his cabinet would be required to respect.
It would be good for the public to know the elements contained in the code which the President has prepared so that each of us can make a personal assessment of its scope and relevance and to evaluate ongoing adherence and compliance with the tenets contained therein.
It might be advisable that all the coalition members of parliament and other high officials subscribe to the code as well.
With his background in the military, where codes of conduct and rules of engagement are the norm, I expect the President to hold his ministers and other officials to the highest standards of ethics, honesty, integrity, service, professionalism and responsibility; and to show fairness, courtesy and respect to all whom they serve; to avoid conflicts of interest, nepotism, bribery, corruption, insider dealings and cronyism; and to specifically warn against public drunkenness, public brawling, intemperate behaviours and driving while intoxicated.
From afar, I am more optimistic about Guyana’s future than I have ever been.
