Africans and vagrants

Dear Editor,

I was astonished to read in an article authored by Henry Jeffery and published in Stabroek News dated May 27, 2015, the following sentence: “Even African vagrants, not usually too concerned about election, were showing off their inked fingers!”

That Dr Jeffrey would refer to African people in such a pejorative and disrespectful manner is in and of itself inexcusable. The fact that Stabroek News editors did not delete the offensive and insulting remark is dumbfounding. Maybe the copy and paste culture is overwhelming the proof reading responsibilities of the Stabroek News editors. Regardless, I do look forward to a retraction and apology for the odious remark made by Dr Jeffrey; also, the Stabroek News management ought to let the public know if it is acceptable in their view for Dr Jeffrey to categorize persons exercising their right to vote as “African vagrants.”

Yours faithfully,

Nigel Hinds

Editor’s note

Mr Hinds has misread Dr Jeffrey’s comment. He was not categorizing all Africans as “vagrants”; he was saying that even the vagrants among the Africans voted.
