It is good to hear that the government will be looking to make available affordable houses to satisfy those who need them. While the intention is laudable, house lots should be made affordable for low income applicants and building materials should be subsidized so that people can build to suit themselves. If they want to build leaving more space on the left, right, front or back for other plans later, they would be able to do so.
In purchasing a plot, the owner will be able to plan with his/her spouse what they want to build and how much they can afford, because for a poor person, building is not really a one shot move. Building your own house gives you a sense of pride and achievement that will be absent when you move into a house you did not participate in constructing.
My son applied for a house lot five years ago; he is not rich, and I doubted whether he could have afforded one with the previous administration, since recently even the low income lots became unreachable for the ordinary wage earner.
Because of this inconsiderate policy, hundreds of young people who had been applying for lots for a number of years are very disappointed. Their goals have been shattered as they observe developers being considered for huge areas of land and who would build houses and sell them much beyond the reach of the ordinary wage-earner.
It is hoped that all the promises made by the new government to make houses and house lots more accessible and affordable will not take forever to materialize.
