Impressed by Volda Lawrence

Dear Editor,

I am not easily impressed, but I am this time. Almost two months to the day since she took office, Minister Volda Lawrence keeps besting herself with works that speak loudly.

First, she took a road trip to get a first-hand look at the experience of pensioners at a post office, and pulled no punches with what she encountered. Not acceptable!

Second, she visited the shelters recently and reels in disbelief from the ambience, and what she sees, and what she hears.

It was a tough stop, made tougher by the stories shared by the unfortunate in our midst; stories that never saw the light of day for the last two decades. Nobody cared, or cared enough.

And third, I now read in last Sunday’s KN that she is opening her doors to the public every Wednesday from 09:00hrs to 13:00hrs. The Minister wants to listen to the people, and hear their concerns, their fears, their issues.

Perhaps, she can, and will, take matters towards resolution for those who need this the most.

Finally, somebody ‒ a sitting minister no less ‒ is doing right by our longsuffering, scorned, poor, weak, and vulnerable. Finally, somebody is not talking about roads and buildings (or abusing foreign dignitaries in their homes), but doing the work of humanity in true servant-leader fashion. Hopefully the trail that she is blazing will be followed quickly and closely by others.

Now all of this is wonderful, but adds up to bad news for the Minister. Having taken her responsibilities seriously and to an admirable level, more is expected of her. Like I said, I am impressed, and I believe that she will be up to the task and expectations, too.

Yours faithfully,

GHK Lall
