Breakfast for schoolchildren would improve their performance and health

Dear Editor,

I write in reference to a letter in the July 18 edition of the Stabroek News, titled, ‘Instead of a cash payment to parents, give breakfast to schoolchildren.” I wholeheartedly agree with Mr Nowrang Persaud’s sentiments as mentioned in this letter. There are too many children in our country who are nutrition deficient and are not being properly fed. Instead of a cash payment, a simple breakfast meal would significantly improve a child’s performance and overall health, this does not necessitate extravagance as a simple glass of milk/juice and some nutritional biscuits would suffice.

Years ago, a similar decision to serve breakfast in school was implemented and was of great benefit to the student population.

In addition to this, recent information received from the health centres managed by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation shows that many children who are treated for various illnesses also suffer from some form of malnutrition.

In light of this, I believe that funds should be spent wisely and wholly for the benefit of the population, and I do hope that the government takes this suggestion into consideration in aid of targeting the future generation of children.

Yours faithfully,
