Dear Editor,
I am not a political person since I am not affiliated to any political party and never had any such ambitions. As a Guyanese senior citizen I am somewhat concerned about the present state of affairs in our country.
There has been much controversy about the 1980 constitution. Those of us who were in this country during 1978, would remember the brouhaha surrounding the referendum that was held. There were allegations that the voting procedures were not transparent and the results seemed questionable. However the 1980 constitution was introduced and we decided to work with it.
Let the Guyanese public be reminded that the present constitution replaced the Independence constitution which our political leaders agreed to before Britain granted us nationhood. The legislation catered for a governing prime minister and a ceremonial president.
In conclusion, we need to ask the question: whither Guyana? Do we hold an authentic referendum to remedy the flaws in the present constitution or will we revert to the Independence constitution which was the original one?
