Stabroek Bazaar in filthy state

Dear Editor,

It is with great concern that I have to write to you on behalf of the stallholders in the Stabroek Bazaar (Stabroek Market)

For years we have been selling in a dirty, smelly Bazaar; complaint after complaint has been made with no action taken. Now a new government has taken over, it is time for a change.

In the Stabroek Bazaar where green vegetables, eatables like sweets, biscuits, candy, etc, are sold, there are no toilet facilities so they use the Bazaar or walk to the back of the Bazaar. On the ground water is lodged and green vegetables fall on the ground, are picked up and maybe washed and sold. Early in the morning evidence of rats can be seen.

The urine has to be washed by stallholders. Our main concern is the smell and stench that emanates in the morning when you enter the Bazaar.

I spent almost $30,000 of my own money for sand, cement and labour to fill potholes between the Bazaar and Gandhi’s, where customers could not walk because of the urine, etc. When it rains, it floods, because the silt in the drain prevents water from passing. I hope measures are taken very soon to stop this ongoing stench. Over to you Councillors.

Yours faithfully,
H Balram
Bazaar stallholder
