GABA president Singh not seeking reelection

Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) President Michael Singh said he will not be seeking re-election when the entity’s stages its impending election for office bearers.

Singh was elected to office unchallenged on January 26 last year and the GABA is expected to stage its Annual General Meeting (AGM) between the period January 19-24 at a venue to be disclosed.

Speaking exclusively with Stabroek Sports, Singh said: “In the beginning when I took office in 2013, the plan was for two years. We didn’t have a president and we had no structure so I had committed for two years.”

Singh, who also holds the portfolio of Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Vice President said he plans to remain a member of GABF.

“I will stay at the federation level,” he declared.

According to Singh he will now focus on creating the administrative building blocks such as table officials, referees and a web site at the national level.

“We want to work with the females and create a programme. We are looking at a 100 girls starting from U14. If we get 20 good ones its progress,” he added.

Asked if he will still be a part of the association subsequent to demitting office, Singh said:” I will still be a part of GABA. Whoever is incoming, I will work with them. I know I can’t pull myself out completely but we need someone to step up and take the hot seat and I will support them.

“Once the person is ready to work and is not narrowed-minded and negative, once they are about development and activity, I will support them. The only way we can get development is through activity.”

Asked if he has any intention of returning to the post in the future, the Colts Basketball Club boss said: “If they (GABA) fail within the two next two years, if they don’t continue with the momentum over the two years, I would pick up the slack. If in the first six months they don’t do anything I will do it.”
