Caribbean Collision card finalised

While boxing fans around the world are buzzing from the news of an impending mega fight involving pound for pound kings Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) is busy putting together a mega card of their own.

Dubbed the ‘Caribbean Collision’ and slated for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on February 21, the five-fight all-pro event is scheduled to feature a former world champion, a two-time world title challenger and three WBC CABOFE title holders.

Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings 17(12)-1-0 will defend his CABOFE welterweight belt against Guyana’s first world champion, Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis 23(20)-4(3)-2 in the main attraction of the evening. The event was originally billed for Jamaica on February 28 but the GBBC finalized a deal to host the highly anticipated card in Lewis’ backyard.

According to a source from Mullings’ camp, the Jamaican is happy with the change of venue and will look to bolster his record by defeating another local prize fighter who enjoyed success on the world scene. Mullings, 32, unanimously defeated Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman on April 20, 2013 to earn the then vacant title.

Lewis who turned 44 mid last month, has not fought since October, 2008 and rumours of his prolonged hiatus from the ring ranged from being content with his lucrative earnings in his heyday to not having the desire to train any longer.

However, the former WBA title holder views Mullings as just an opponent to reignite his career.

The southpaw is ready for the challenge, insisting that money is not the issue.

The main supporting bout will feature CABOFE middleweight champion Edmond DeClou and national super middleweight title holder, Derrick Richmond in an eight-round middleweight rematch. DeClou has not been in the ring since October, 2013 after his career was shelved due to a broken jaw compliments of a left hand from Richmond.

Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques, the flyweight CABOFE title holder will lace it up against undefeated prospect, Quincy Gomes in a catch weight fight scheduled for six rounds.

USA’s Lorrissa ‘The Cheetah’ Rivas of Las Vegas, Nevada will face Guyanese, Sharon Ward. Their super middleweight bout is planned for four rounds.

The season premier also features debutants Travis Fraser and Charwyn Estwick matching gloves in a four-round light middleweight contest.

Tickets cost $3000 for ringside and half that amount for regular seating.
