Monedderlust lose to arch-rivals NA United

Mayor’s Cup 2015…

-Cougars eliminate Rosignol United

Monedderlust FC and Rosignol United became the latest casualties of the Mayors Cup Knockout Football tourney, losing to New Amsterdam United and Cougars FC on Saturday at the No. #5 ground in Berbice.

In the feature contest, home side Monedderlust went down to arch-rivals New Amsterdam United 5-4 on penalty kicks after regulation and extra time says the match tied 1-1. Rosignol on the other hand, was dismantled by Cougars by a 4-1 margin.

Due the wins, New Amsterdam United will now faceoff with Fruta Conquerors while Cougars will lock horns with the Guyana Defence Force. With the scores locked at 1-1 at the end of normal and regulation time in the main encounter, a penalty shoot-out was required to settle the outcome.

Asked to take first strike was Monedderlust in the form of Kevin Layne Jr. The versatile midfielder however, would disappoint the small crowd from the mark as he was denied smartly by the opposing custodian with his legs low to his left.

The visitors would quickly seize the initiative as Delroy Ferdinand netted to secure an early lead. New Amsterdam would maintain the lead in the second round as both sides scored from the distance in the second round through Henry Watts (Monedderlust) and Adrian Adams.

The clinical finishing would continue in the third round with Jamal Joseph scoring for the home side and Samuel Johnson netting for the visitors.

The fourth round would prove to be more of the same as Kelvin Cottoy netted for Monedderlust while Graham Thomas scored for the guests.

Needing to score to keep the match alive for Monedderlust in the fifth round, Atlyn Browne would bury his effort into the top left hand corner.

Only requiring a conversion to seal the win, the visitors would score with the striker placing the ball into the right hand corner to punch their ticket to the next round.

Prior to the penalty shoot-out, New Amsterdam United took the early lead through an Adams penalty kick conversion to the lower right hand corner in the 43rd minute, following a clumsy challenge within the centre of the area.

However, the hosts would level proceedings in the 64th minute compliments of a Joseph effort. Racing into left side of the box, the diminutive attacker upon latching onto a right sided cross would clinically direct his header across the body of the keeper into the right hand corner.

It would then go from bad to worse for New Amsterdam United as midfielder Lenardo Adams was shown a straight red card in the 80th minute for violent conduct, after striking an opposing player with his elbow while trying to maintain possession of the ball.

Despite the numerical handicap, New Amsterdam United would force the match into the penalty shoot-out realm after negotiating a further 30 minutes of extra time.

In the earlier matchup, Cougars, after a 0-0 first half, broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute through an Alvin Reynolds effort, finishing into the back of the net after an initial strike from a teammate was parried into his path.

Cleroy Joseph would then make it 2-0 as he found the back of the net 65th minute, rifling his right footed attempt from outside the area into the right hand corner after cutting in from the left side of the field.

The score line would continue to balloon as Collis Burnette scored in the 78th minute. Lurking within the centre of the area, Burnette would slot his shot to back of the goal after collecting a Sherwin Parris left sided pass from within the box.

Playing provider to the early goal, Parris would etch his name on the scorer’s tab four minutes onward. Racing down the left flank, Parris upon cutting into the penalty box, would unleash a precise strike into the right hand corner with the outside of his right boot.

With the matchup done and dusted, Rosignol United would net a consolation goal in the 90th+2 minute through a Mark Wronge strike, the player curling his right footed attempt into the right hand corner after cutting into the area from the left wing.
