Malcom re-elected to lead Jamaica’s umpires

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC– Norman Malcolm, who resigned recently from the West Indies Panel of Umpires, has been re-elected president of the Jamaica Cricket Umpires Association (JCUA).

Malcolm was re-elected unopposed during the annual general meeting of the JCUA, at the Rex Nettleford Hall, University of the West Indies last weekend.

The 59-year-old, who stood in 27 one-day internationals and seven Twenty20, says his mandate will be to finish the work he started back in 2002.

“I’m ecstatic to have been re-elected, as I have some unfinished business as to where I would like to take the JCUA,” said Malcolm.

“It has been a successful journey so far where my team and I have been able to raise the standard and profile of umpires in the country”.

Three Jamaican umpires are on the senior West Indies Panel including Patrick Gustard who recently officiated in the final of the WICB Super50 in Trinidad and Tobago.

Verdayne Smith and Chris Taylor are the other Senior Panel umpires while Chris Wright, Jacqueline Williams, and Athol Hamilton are members of the West Indies Emerging Panel.

“This has come about as a result of periodic training and assessment of umpires, and a yearly retreat whereby we update umpires as to the new rules and regulations of the game,” said Malcolm.

“Through extensive recruiting, we have been able to increase the cadre of umpires in all zones, which has allowed us to effectively officiate all competitions”.
