Khalil, Jonas Open, Category A champs

Jason Ray Khalil (-24) and Lucas Jonas (-3) were crowned the Open and Category-A champions respectively when the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Bounty Farm Handicap Squash tourney concluded yesterday at the Georgetown Club Squash Courts.

Khalil edged Nyron Joseph (-16) by a 2-1 margin while Jonas defeated sibling Ethan Jonas (-1) in straight sets. In the Open Category finale, Khalil took the early lead as he won the first set by a 15 – 13 score line.

Joseph would then level the scores in the second stanza as he won in commanding fashion by a 15 – 4 score. However, Khalil would be denied the victory, clinching the championship in the third set by a 15 – 11 margin.

Securing the third position in the category was Nicholas Narain who won via walkover over Raphael DeGroot. In the Category-A section final, Lucas Jonas took a 1-0 as he claimed the first set 15 – 7. He would then clinch the title as he won the second set 15 – 9.

In the third place fixture of the same section, Michael Alphonso (-1) overcame Demetrius DeAbreu (-1) 13 – 15, 15 – 10, 15 – 6.

In the final of the Open category plate section, Alex Cheeks (+7) was crowned the winner, defeating Joe Mekdeci (0) in straight sets. Cheeks jumped into the early advantage as he claimed the opening set 15 – 11.

The title would then be claimed in the second stanza as he won by a 15 – 12 score line. In the third place fixture of the section, Tiffany Solomon defeated Stephen Fernandes via the walkover route.

The plate finale of Category-A section saw Jason Gomes (+4) defeating Kamir Khan (+7) in straight sets. Racing off to a 1-0 lead by winning the first set 15 – 11, Gomes would secure the title in the second set, winning by a 15 – 13 margin.

In the third place matchup, Paige Fernandes (+10) defeated Chad De Abreu (+11) by a 15 – 9, 15 – 7 score line.
