Port Mourant Jaguars win BVA competition

An unbeaten Port Mourant Jaguars team emerged winners of the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) “B” division competition after defeating Port Mourant Training Centre 2 (PMTC2) last Sunday.

The mini competition, which was held at the newly commissioned All-Weather Volleyball Court at the Port Mourant Community Centre, witnessed several teams spiking it out on the new all-purpose hardcourt.

Port Mourant Jags (PMJ), captained by Buddy Motiepersaud saw good performances from Afraz Hussain, Javed Motiepersaud and Adityanand Singh who aided in their victory over the Rollers of New Amsterdam in the first semifinal, winning 30-24.

After advancing to the final against favorites PMTC 2 who defeated newcomers Tain Volleyball Club 30-16 in the other semi-final, PMJ defeated PMTC2 in the final 30-25 to win a trophy donated by the National Sport Commission and a Mikasa MVA 330 volleyball.

In the preliminary “ round- robin” matches played in two groups the scores were:-Group A -PMJ defeated PMTC4- 30-15; Tain VC defeated 3 Doors Strikers of D’Edward 30-28; PMJ defeated 3 Doors Strikers 30-20 ; PMJ defeated Tain VC 20-08 and in Group B- PMTC2 defeated PMTC 3 -30-15 ; Rollers defeated PMTC3- 30-16 and PMTC2 defeated Rollers 31-29.

Special prizes were presented to the following players:- Adityanand Singh(former National Under 19 player in the 1990’s) for being adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP),Afraz Hussain of PMJ for being the Best Setter and current National Under 19 player, Joshua Jagmohan for being the Most Promising Player.
