Ramdyhan is Assuria ladies Open singles champion

Nicola Ramdyhan defeated her mother and national coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan to win the Assuria ladies singles Open title in the final played Saturday at the National Racquet Centre.

Nicola Ramdyan recovered from being down 0-3 in the first set by tactfully absorbing the powerful groundstrokes of her coach/mom, using it consistently to her advantage to win the first set 6-4.

In the second set Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan again led 4-1 before with some excellent play she levelled the score before going on to win the set and the match 6-4.

In the men’s semifinal Anthony Downes quickly brushed aside 13-year-old Mark McDonald 6-1, 6-O to set up a clash against Daniel Lopes in the men’s Open final. The final will take place Thursday at the NASH tennis Club.

Lopes had beaten Leyland Leacock in an exhilarating encounter to reach the final.

In the first set both players struggled to hold serve but Leacock prevailed to close the set at 6-3. In the second set Lopes stepped up his game and unleashed a variety of solid groundstrokes from the baseline to win 6-0. In the third set Leacock fought back and was up 3-0 before a determined Lopes won the next two games.

Leacock, however, rebounded to win the next two games to go up 5-2. Lopes then broke back to take the score to 5-3 and held serve for 5-4. The experienced Leacock, serving for the match then lost his serve to Lopes who delivered several passing shots to even the score at 5-5. At this time both players became more aggressive and held serve to 6-6. In the tie breaker Leacock won the first two points after which it was all Lopes who triumphed 7-2 to win the set and match.

Carlos Adams and Godfrey Lowden will face each other in the men’s over 35 and men’s over 45 singles finals. The men’s over 35 final will be played at the Le Ressouvenir tomorrow and the men’s over 45 at Harry Panday’s court otherwise known as NASH tennis Club.

In the Men’s over 35 singles, Lowden held his ground for 3 hours and 20 minutes to defeat resilient veteran Rudy Grant 6-7(6/8), 7-5, 6-2 after defeating Chethan Narayan 7-6(10/8), 6-2 while in the men’s over 45 singles Lowden had blasted Stephen David-Longe 6-0, 6-1 to book a semi-final spot.

In the Novices category, 2014 Trophy Stall Novices doubles champion Daniel Razick defeated 2014 GBTI Novices singles finalist Charles Adams 6-1 in the Final of the 2015 Assuria Open singles classic.

Throughout the match Razick showed perfect form and consistency as he maintained his composure to win.
