Calvin Roberts passes away

The media fraternity was plunged into mourning following the passing of Guyana Chronicle’s senior sport reporter, Calvin Roberts.

Roberts, who was employed at the daily for the past five years, passed away Tuesday night at the Davis Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. The father of two was 43.

Chronicle’s sports editor, Leon Horatio confirmed the news of the award winning journalist’s death and told Stabroek Sport that Roberts was “committed and dedicated to his trade.”

Horatio added that the former captain of the media cricket team was always willing to go the extra mile and has left behind a solid foundation of hard work for other sports journalists to follow.

After the news of his passing broke, the Guyana Press Association released the following statement:

The Guyana Press Association is deeply saddened by the passing of Sports Journalist Calvin Roberts.

Mr. Roberts, 43, passed away last evening after a period of hospitalization due to kidney failure.

While reporting on sports, Roberts shared a love of cricket and his colleagues knew him for fast bowling and decent left-handed ability while playing for Ace Warriors, a second-division team that featured regularly in the Georgetown Cricket Association limited-overs competition.

He was also a youth member of Malteenoes Sports Club, and served as the Public Relations Officer of the Rose Hall Sports and Youth Club.

In 2013, he was named Sports Journalist of the Year by the Guyana Cricket Board. Mr. Roberts exhibited a deep passion for his profession worthy of emulation by his peers.

The Guyana Press Association extends deepest sympathy to his family, other relatives, colleagues and friends of Calvin Roberts.

Kaieteur News sports journalist Sean Devers, who played a key role in Roberts becoming a journalist, last night told Stabroek Sports that he was shocked to learn of his friend’s death.

“I’m shocked. Actually my mom told me I did not know.

“I knew him since we were small in West. We grew up together and when I made the Guyana (U19) team, I carried him to Malteenoes. When I started journalism, I recommended him,” said Devers adding,”..He was a good journalist.”

Roberts will surely be missed by the sporting fraternity.

Funeral arrangements to be announced later.
