Guyana lose to Suriname at basketball

Guyana opened their international three match tour of Suriname in the worst possible manner, going down to the Dutch nation by a 63-59 score line on Friday at the Anthony Nesty Indoor Stadium.

The team for the matchup was Akeem Kanhai (Captain), Ryan Gullen, Jermaine Slater, Rudy James, Dave Causeway, Shelroy Thomas, Harold Adams, Travis Burnett, Dominic Vincente, Jason Squires and Royston Siland.

Trailing 11-18 after the conclusion of the first period, Guyana would fall further behind as they were outscored 19-16 in the second stanza to go into the half time interval behind at 27-37. The hosts would continue to maintain their advantage over the Guyanese, marginally outscoring the visitors 15-14 to go into the final period ahead 52-41. Despite staring down a 11 point deficit, Guyana almost staged a comeback as they outshot the hosts 18-11 to end the match.

Thomas was the leading scorer for Guyana with 13 points while Slater netted eighth points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Adams scored eighth points. Contributing seven points each were Kanhai and Causway.

Up to press time, Guyana competed in their second match yesterday at the same and will play their final match tonight.

The tour is part of the country’s preparation for the upcoming 2015 CBC Championships in the British Virgin Islands from June 16th-20th.Guyana is positioned in group-A of the event alongside their current foes, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas and Bermuda.

The two top teams in the group will qualify for the championship’s final four section. Guyana finished fifth at the 2014 edition of the CBC Championships held in the same nation. Guyana in their recent international outing, swept CBC rival Bermuda 3-0 during the month of March at home.
