Guyana defeat Suriname, draws level in B/ball series

Guyana drew level in their three match international basketball tour of Suriname, defeating the host nation in game two by a 57-50 score line on Saturday at the Anthony Nesty Indoor Stadium in Paramaribo.

Losing their first fixture 63-59, Guyana’s squad for the match featured Akeem Kanhai (Captain), Ryan Gullen, Dave Causway, Shelroy Thomas, Jermaine Slater, Travis Burnett, Harold Adams, Rudy James, Randy Richardson, Kurt Elias, Stephan Gillis and Chris Williams.   

Taking a 18-10 lead in the first period, Guyana would maintain their advantage going into the half time interval as the second period finished 35-27. The visitors would maintain their lead going into the fourth quarter as both sides struggled in a low scoring third period, only scoring eighth points each as the period ended 43-35.

Guyana would eventually clinch the match in the final period despite being outscored 15-14 to setup a intriguing final matchup. Causway led the winners with 13 points, four steals and three assists while Gullen netted 13 points ad eighth rebounds.

Kanhai recorded nine points , seven rebounds and three assists while Thomas chipped in with nine points, three assists and six rebounds alongside Slater’s eighth points and 11 rebounds. Suriname’s Yves Goedschalk netted a game high 14 points.

Up to press time, Guyana was competing in their final match yesterday at the same locale. The tour is part of the country’s preparation for the upcoming 2015 CBC Championships in the British Virgin Islands from June 16th-20th.

Guyana is positioned in group-A of the event alongside their current foes, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas and Bermuda. The two top teams in the group will qualify for the championship’s final four section.

Guyana finished fifth at the 2014 edition of the CBC Championships held in the same nation. Guyana in their recent international outing, swept CBC rival Bermuda 3-0 during the month of March at home.
