Boxers depart for Pan Am Games qualifiers

On their quest to clinch a Pan American Games berth next month in Canada, a four-member team of Guyana’s finest amateur boxers winged out to Mexico yesterday to compete at the Games qualifiers.Along with Coach Sebert Blake, the confident outfit left on a Copa Airlines flight destined for Tijuana where the qualifiers will be staged from June 4-9.

The association was up to Thursday battling on the ropes to secure funds, but their sojourn was made possible by the Government of Guyana, the Guyana Olympic Association and other entities like the Guyana Lottery Company.

Dennis Thomas, Dellon Charles, Jason Phillips and Dawani Lampkin were the boxers that departed yesterday. According to president of the association, Steve Ninvalle, US based Quincy ‘Biggie’ Small was scheduled to compete at the qualifiers but he fell ill and will not make the trip.

The 2015 Pan American Games will take place in Toronto, Canada from July 10-26 and will feature 36 Pan American-recognized summer sports.
