Female B/ball team off to CARICOM C/ships

The Guyana Female team departed local shores yesterday to compete in the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships, scheduled for Tortola, British Virgin Islands from Monday.

The championships ends June 12th.

The team, which will be under head-coach Julian Haynes and his assistant Kirk Fraser, consists of 12 local and overseas-based players. Led by captain Miriam McKenzie, the squad includes Ginelle Ifill, Tamara Hunter, Sonia Rodney, Shanna Chester, Nichola Jacobs, Merisa Lewis, Kean Andrews, Lowquantor Gibson, Necosia Mitchell, Timike Joseph-De-Rouche and Tamika Alphonso.

Completing the travelling contingent is FIBA-accredited referee Sherwin Henry. Guyana will compete in group-B along with Barbados, Jamaica and the host nation. They will open their campaign on Monday against the hosts before facing off with Jamaica the following day.

They will then end their group campaign against Barbados on Wednesday before progressing to the classification round. Group-A comprises Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Virgin Islands.

The male event will run from June 13th-22nd. The squad, which is under the tutelage of Head-Coach Darcel Harris, is expected to named shortly.

The current provisional squad comprises of local players Akeem Kanhai (captain), Dave Causeway, Travis Burnette, Shelroy Thomas, Nikkoloi Smith, Terron Welch, Jason Squires, Harold Adams, Ryan Gullen, Jermaine Slater, Chris Williams, Dominic Vincente, Rudy James, Royston Siland, Kurt Elias and Shane Webster alongside overseas base players, Keron McKenzie, Ray Victor, Gordon Klaiber, Delroy James and John Ashley.

Completing the management staff is Marlon Rodrigues who will serve as Assistant Coach while Troy Greene will be the Team Manager and Junior Hercules will serve as his Assistant.

Guyana in their most recent international series, lost 2-1 to CBC rival Suriname in the Dutch nation. Prior to their Suriname tour, Guyana swept another CBC rival in Bermuda 3-0 at home in the month of March.

Guyana will compete in group-A along with Suriname, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas and Bermuda. The two top teams in the group will qualify for the championship’s final four section. Guyana finished fifth at the 2014 edition of the CBC Championships held in the same nation.
