Women’s basketball team out of medal contention after loss to B/dos

Team Guyana ended their group campaign in the 2015 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women’s Championships winless going down to Barbados 61-81 yesterday at the Multi Sports Complex in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.

Miriam McKenzie was once again the standout for the Guyanese as she netted 25 points while picking 11 rebounds to claim a double-double. Supporting with figures of 12 points and eight rebounds was Merisa Lewis while Sonia Rodney and Nichola Jacobs netted six points each.

For the Barbadians, Marie Cumberbatch recorded the game-high 29 points and she also pulled down nine rebounds while able support was provided by Jamila Studer with 23 points and eight rebounds, Toni Atherly with 10 points and five rebounds and Lana Metesh with six points and as many rebounds.

Trailing the Barbadians 14-20 after the conclusion of the first period, the Guyanese would fall further behind as they were outshot 29-23 to go into the half time interval trailing by a 49-37 score line.

Barbados would then extend their advantage in the third period, outscoring Guyana 14-11 to go into the final stanza ahead by a 63-48 margin. The Barbadians would then complete the win in the final period as the outhustled the Guyanese by an 18-13 score.

Due to the losses, Guyana finish group-B in the cellar position. They will now advance to the classification round to battle for positions 5-8 from today.
