New government approves CGI’s request for foreign currency account

Local Professional Cricket League (PCL) franchise, Cricket Guyana Inc. (CGI) recently had its request for a Foreign Currency Account via Scotiabank approved by the new Guyana government.

So said the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Secretary Anand Sanasie during a brief interview with Stabroek Sports yesterday.

According to Sanasie, the Guyana Jaguars players will now be getting full value for their money after the GOG approved the request for the account some two weeks back.

“Since last year September CGI through the Guyana Jaguars franchise applied for the USD foreign currency bank account through Scotiabank who then applied to the Bank of Guyana where approval was given.”

The CGI executive added that the application was left on the desk of then Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh for approximately nine months.

“From October last year to now it was sitting on Minister of Finance’s desk and despite many inquiries we were not getting anything. The government then changed, we made inquiries and our approval was given so the players could now be properly paid their contract and match earning fees after nine months of the previous government denying it,” he explained.

The CGI PCL players will now receive their monthly salary and other fees in USD currency for the period under which they are contracted by the local cricket franchise.
