New champion to be crowned in Castrol 50-mile cycle road race

The cycling season continues today with the staging of a 50-mile road race at West Demerara.

Coordinated by Hassan Mohamed, the Castrol-sponsored event is scheduled for an 8am start at the Wales Police Station.

The wheelsmen will then proceed to Bushy Park then turn back for the finish and prize presentation at Schoonord.

This year’s race will see a new champion being crowned as 2013 and 2014 winner, Raynauth Jeffrey is inujred while other national riders, Geron Williams, Alanzo Greaves and Hamza Eastman are all racing on the US circuit.

Just as they did in last month’s Independence Three-Stage road race, cyclist from Team Evolution (Orville Hinds, Michael Anthony, Raul Leal, Marlon Williams and Akeem Wilkinson) are expected to dominate tomorrow’s event.

Riders from Team Alanis, Team Coco’s and Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club will also be aiming for the podium spots.

Team Coco’s Jeffrey, took the top honors in last year’s race in one hour, 55 minutes and 17 seconds. The competitors this year will be keen on finishing faster.

Akeem Arthur (Junior), Toshwanna Doris (Female), Monty Parris (Over-60) and Ozia McAulay (Mountain Bike) were the other categorical winners in 2014.

According to Mohamed, Castrol’s representative Junior Persaud will be on hand to witness the race and present prizes.

This year marks the 16th consecutive occasion that Castrol has sponsored the event to commemorate Father’s Day.
