James records double-double in Guyana loss

Guyana got their Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) men’s championship off to the worst possible start, losing to Antigua and Barbuda 80-60 in their group opener yesterday at the Multi Sports Complex in Tortola.

Overseas import Gordon James led the Guyanese with a double-double of 19 points, 15 rebounds and one assist while the next best contributors were Travis Burnette with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists and Dave Causway with 11 points and three rebounds.

Chipping in with figures of six points, seven rebounds and two assists was Akeem Kanhai while Shelroy Thomas recorded five points, three rebounds and one assist. For the victors, Jerome Richardson top scored with 14 points, three rebounds and five assists.

He was supported by Lennox McCoy who recorded 13 points, four rebounds and two assists, Ernest Scott who netted 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, Clinton Joshua who chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists and Raviel Burton who netted 11 points and seven rebounds.

The first period of the fixture saw Antigua and Barbuda securing an early advantage, outscoring Guyana by a 21-12 score line. They would then extend their lead in the second period as they outshot Guyana by a 21-13 margin to go into the half leading 42-25.

Antigua and Barbuda would maintain their grip on the fixture going into the final period, outshooting the Guyanese 23-21 to take a 65-46 lead. They would then seal the win in the final stanza, netting 15 points while restricting Guyana to 14.
