Mahaicony Technical Institute crowned Region Five champs

Mahaicony Technical Institute were crowned the new Region Five champs, downing holders Bush Lot Secondary on penalty kicks following a 1-1 score at the end of normal time when the 5th edition of the Digicel Secondary Schools Football Championship continued yesterday.

With the scores locked at 1-1 at the end of normal time, Mahaicony Technical Institutewould seal the title in dramatic fashion, netting four of their five allotted kicks while Bush Lot Secondary only scored three times from the mark at the No. 5 ground.

In the earlier minutes of the fixture, Shaquille DeHearte gave the defending champs the initial advantage compliments of a 49th-minute strike. However, Mahaicony would push the fixture into the penalty shoot-out realm as Christopher Abbensetts scored in the 87th minute.

At the Tucville Community Ground, Christ Church Secondary downed the Guyana Education Trust College (GETC) by a 3-1 score line.

Nicholas Vicente opened the scoring for the Middle and Camp streets unit compliments of a right-footed strike into the right side of the net in the second minute of play.

Shamar Carrington would then increase their lead six minutes later, placing his right-footed effort from within the penalty box into the back of the net, after the keeper inadvertently dived over the ball.  It would then become 3-0 in the 43rd minute as Amoniki Gomes directed his effort into the centre of net, after latching onto a cross from the right side of the field while within the penalty area.

GETC would then be handed a golden opportunity to get back into the matchup in the 52nd minute as Christ Church conceded a penalty kick for a clumsy challenge within the left side of the box.

However GETC would fail to convert from the distance as custodian Lemuel Ross deflected the ball to safety with his outstretched leg.

Nonetheless, GETC would eventually net a consolation goal in the 58th minute as Brian Williams netted, blasting his right-footed strike into the lower right hand corner, after cutting into the centre of the box.

Over at the Leonora Sports Facility, Uitvlugt Secondary defeated Patentia Secondary by a 4-1 margin while Covent Garden Secondary defeated Diamond Secondary 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time ended at 0-0 at the Timehri Red Ground.

At the Burnham Park, Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre defeated Manchester Secondary by a 3-1 margin. Action in the event is slated to continue today with several matches at various venues.
