Defending champs Port Kaituma through to final

Defending champs Port Kaituma sealed their berth to the final of the Region #1 zone, edging Kamwata Secondary 1-0 in a semi-final affair when the Digicel Secondary Schools Football Championship continued yesterday at the Kumaka ground.

Under soggy conditions, Mark Williams earned the titleholders their berth in the final with a 42nd minute conversion in a physical affair highlighted by a lack of opportunities.

Due to the victory, Port Kaituma will faceoff with the winner of today’s Santa Rosa Secondary and North West Secondary semi-final matchup at the same venue in the grand finale tomorrow.

With both sides failing to fashion any opportunities, the large viewership would be given reasons to celebrate as Williams broke the deadlock two minutes into the second half of the 80th minute encounter.

Bearing down on the centre of the goal in an attempt to receive a through pass, Williams fortuitously received the ball after it bounced over the goalkeeper’s ahead when the custodian kicked the ball into the forward’s body, allowing him to stab home into the empty net.

Kamwata almost levelled the score in the 50th minute as Silas Francis fired his effort just wide of the left corner from within the left side of the box, after collecting a lobbed pass from the centre of the field.

Similarly, Port Kaituma nearly doubled their lead in the 68th minute through Carlos Marques, whose right footed freekick from the right side of the field, was parried around the right post by the custodian.

Goal scoring opportunities continued with Sherwin Bunbury almost levelling the fixture in the 76th minute for Kamwata as his curling right footed effort from the left side of the field, flew narrowly wide of the top left hand corner, leaving the opposing custodian rooted to the spot.

In the East Bank Section, Friendship Secondary clinched the divisional title, dismantling St. Cuthbert’s Mission by a 3-0 margin at the Timehri Red Ground.
