Guyana records first win at Regional U17 tournament

—defeat title holders B/dos by 66 runs; Jamaica romps to third straight victory

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC – Jamaica trounced Leeward Islands for their third straight win to remain unbeaten while title-holders Barbados lost again in a rain-hit contest, in the third round of the Regional Under-17 Tournament here yesterday.

Playing at Louis D’or, Jamaica recorded a 35-run verdict to follow up wins over Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago earlier in the week.

Guyana were also in winners’ row, beating Barbados by 66 runs at Shaw Park while the previously unbeaten Windward Islands went down to hosts Trinidad and Tobago by seven wickets at Canaan.

In a game that was also affected by rain and reduced to 33 overs per side, Jamaica needed a top score of 58 from Brad Barnes as they recovered from a wobble to reach 197 all out off 32.4 overs.

Dominic Samuels struck 27 and added 59 for the second wicket with Kashwayne Beale who stroked 23.

Javani Tyson led the Leewards with three for 19 while Zawandi Whyte took three for 21 and Keshawn Richardson, three for 32.

In reply, opener Joshua Grant carried his bat for an unbeaten 59 from 91 balls with three fours and a six, but the Leewards finished on 162 for nine.

Shalom Parnell claimed three for 25 with Barnes, and Spence and Javeur Royal, all taking two wickets each.

Barbados’ poor form continued as they collapsed for a disappointing 135 off 36.3 overs, in pursuit of a revised target of 202 off 42 overs.

Left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd destroyed the innings with four for 23 while Kevin Sinclair (2-19) and Sagar Hatheramani (2-27) grabbed two wickets apiece.

Opener Shian Brathwaite top-scored with 38 while Najee Holder chipped in with 32 and Donte Niles, 21.

Earlier, captain Rolando Alimohamed top-scored with 70 from 67 balls with nine fours and two sixes while Bhaskar Yadram stroked an unbeaten 69 from 73 deliveries with four fours and a six as Guyana reached 219 for eight after opting to bat first.

The pair added 129 for the sixth wicket after Guyana faltered at 70 for five in the 26thover.

In the other game, T&T impressively chased down a target of 173 thanks to Kirstan Kallicharran’s 77 not out off 88 balls, which included nine fours and a six.

He put on 91 in an unbroken fourth wicket  stand with Siba Batoosingh (24 not out) to see T&T over the line.
