Joseph eliminated but Wiltshire siblings remain on course for medals

National U-19 champion Nyron Joseph suffered his first defeat at the 33rd Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) championships going down to arch rival Trinidad’s Nku Patrick 3-2 when the singles part of the tournament continued in Barbados yesterday.

Joseph, one of Guyana’s best hopes for a medal in the boys U19 singles had earlier in the day defeated Kion Knights of Bermuda 11-2, 11-5, 11-3 but in a key fixture among two of the favourites for the division, was edged 3-2 in a five set thriller losing to the Trinidad and Tobago native 4-11, 11-1, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9.

In the other matchup of the section, Chad Salandy of Trinidad and Tobago defeated Alec Melville 11-2, 11-6, 11-9.

Guyana’s two competitors in the boys’ U17 category remained in contention however as Alexander Cheeks defeated Gyles Luke of the Cayman Islands 12-10, 12-10, 11-4 and Zachary Harris of Barbados 11-8, 11-6, 12-10 while Benjamin Mekdeci crushed Reginald Brewster of Barbados 11-2, 11-5, 11-2 and Jonathan Walker of Jamaica 11-6, 11-4, 11-8.

However in the U15 category the Islam brothers were not so fortunate with Jasun Sairsingh of the Cayman Islands defeating Anthony Islam 11-8, 11-4, 11-0 while Khamal Cumberbatch of Barbados defeated Daniel Islam 11-2, 11-5, 11-4.

Daniel Islam had earlier defeated Kobie Khan of Trinidad and Tobago 11-6, 7-11, 11-3, 11-8.

In the U13 section, Guyana’s top player Shomari Wiltshire defeated Christopher Anthony of Trinidad and Tobago 11-0, 11-5, 11-5 and Javan Seale of Barbados 11-4, 11-1, 11-2 while Trinidad and Tobago’s Christopher Anthony defeated Justin Lilico 11-6, 11-8, 11-6 and Bermuda’s Charlie Riker defeated Samuel Ince-Carvahal 11-6, 11-8, 11-6.

The final two matches of the section witnessed Jamaica’s Sebastian Levy downing Gianni Carpenter 11-2, 11-2, 11-9 and Carpenter defeating Joshua Williams of Trinidad and Tobago 11-8, 11-7, 11-3.

In the girls’ U19 division, Akeila Wiltshire defeated Susanna Armano of Bermuda 11-7, 11-3, 11-3 and sibling Larissa Wiltshire 14-12, 13-11, 11-9 while Gabrielle Fraser defeated Lara Conolly of the Cayman Islands 11-6, 11-6, 11-7.

In the final matches of the section, Larissa Wiltshire defeated Marion Faith Gillezeau of Trinidad and Tobago 11-2, 11-0, 12-10 while Mary Mahfood of Jamaica overcame Taylor Fernandes in straight sets 14-12, 12-10, 11-9.

In the U17 section, Alyssa Mullings of Jamaica defeated Rebecca Low 11-4, 11-6, 11-3 while Amanda Heywood of Barbados defeated Sarah Lewis 11-4, 11-1, 11-4 and Makeda Harding defeated Mia Mahfood of Jamaica 11-9, 10-12, 11-9, 11-4 in their U15 affair.

In the U13 division, Kirsten Gomes defeated Sumairaa Suleman of Barbados 11-3, 11-2, 11-1 while Aaliyah Persaud defeated Sage Gordon 11-3, 11-8, 11-7.

Giovanna Miller-Alexander of Eastern Caribbean States defeated Madison Fernandes 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 and Trinidad and Tobago’s Nicola De Verteuil defeated Haley Carpenter 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5.

The championships continue today.
