Cricket Stakeholders up in arms over perceived secrecy for tomorrow’s Town Hall meeting

A group calling itself the Stakeholders of Guyana’s cricket is up in arms over what it considers the apparent secrecy with respect to the staging of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Town Hall meeting here.

The WICB is scheduled to hold its Town Hall meeting here tomorrow at the Georgetown Cricket Club, Bourda and the group has questioned why the event has not been properly advertised.

“This meeting, for which there is no agenda, appears to be a closely-guarded secret to be attended by only a few carefully chosen persons although the intent of a Town Hall Meeting is to have the participation of all stakeholders and members of the public,” the group’s spokesman stated last evening.

“Also we note that the date of this meeting had misleading information, that is, Tuesday 22nd July, 2015,” he added.

The group said they viewed the developments as being designed by the current administration to maintain control of the sport here.

“We the constituent members of Guyana Cricket view this development as yet another deliberate ploy by the illegal executive members of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) to maintain its stranglehold of our national game despite the effort of the constituent members to bring order, decency and accountability at all levels of cricket in Guyana.”

The group said it wanted to query whether the major players were invited to tomorrow’s meeting.

“We wish to query whether the Government of Guyana, Caricom Secretariat, the Private Sector Commission, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the National Sports Commission, the Political Opposition and the many other major stakeholders of Guyana’s Cricket have been invited to this meeting.”

The group also took issue with the venue suggesting that a public rather than a private venue should have been used one that affords more space.

“We have many times before recorded our extreme disquiet regarding the continuous refusal of the WICB to meet with the legal and constituent members of Guyana’s Cricket instead of, in a self-serving manner, dealing only with a few persons who are holding themselves as executive members of the GCB.

“In this regard, the WICB has been complicit in the illegality and the shenanigans of the GCB.

“With the prolonged crisis in Guyana’s Cricket, it is incumbent on the WICB to ensure that there is legality and accountability of its Member Boards in accordance with the rules of the ICC.

“We expect that any purposeful cricket meeting the WICB proposes to hold in Guyana should be open to all stakeholders, should be comprehensive, objective and analytical, and should have an all-inclusive approach and commitment to resolve the staggering problems in Guyana Cricket.”
