Hughes struggles continue as Derbyshire lose

BRISTOL, England, CMC – Leeward Islands left-hander Chesney Hughes failed for the third time in four days in the Royal London Cup as Derbyshire suffered an unlucky six-wicket defeat to Gloucestershire here yesterday.

The 24-year-old scored just six as Derbyshire, asked to bat first, piled up 275 for five off 48 overs with New Zealander Hamish Rutherford striking 110 and Wayne Madsen, 106.

The pair put on 182 for the third wicket to pull Derby around from 58 for two in the 16th over.

Once Rutherford fell in the 46th over, Derbyshire lost three wickets for 25 runs in the space of 14 balls to fall away at the end, with Hughes spending just four balls at the crease.

He was caught at the wicket off 21-year-old seamer Craig Myles, extending a lean run which has seen him score one and nine in his two previous innings in the competition over the last week.

Following heavy downpours, Gloucestershire’s target was revised to 248 off 48 overs and then 204 from 35. Jack Taylor then slammed an unbeaten 41 from 14 balls in a hasty, unbroken 53-run stand for the fifth wicket with Benny Howell (33 not out), to seal an unlikely win.
