Guyana defeats Bermuda

Defending men and women team champions Guyana sealed their place in the semi-final round, defeating Bermuda yesterday in their respective final group fixtures when the Caribbean Squash Association Championships Team Tourney continued yesterday.

On the women’s side Guyana defeated Bermuda by a 4-1 score line. Ashley DeGroot gave Guyana the early lead as she defeated Emma Keane 11-6, 11-6 and 11-7. Victoria Arjoon then made it 2-0, overcoming Meagan Jackson 4-11, 15-13, 11-5 and 11-6.

Bermuda then pulled one back in the third round as Runa Reta crushed Ashley Khalil 11-5, 11-1 and 11-2. Nevertheless, Larissa Wiltshire clinched the victory in the fourth round, downing Susie Lacie 12-10, 11-5 and 11-9.

Mary Fung-A-Fat then sealed the score line as she defeated Rachel Barnes 11-7, 11-3, 7-11 and 11-3. On the men’s side, Guyana defeated Bermuda by a 3-2 margin. The Guyanese took the early lead in the showdown as Jason Khalil defeated Noah Browne 8-11, 11-9, 12-10 and 11-8.

Bermuda then levelled the score as Chris Stout defeated Nicholas Narain 11-4, 10-12, 11-3 and 11-1. Guyana then retook the lead as Sunil Seth overcame Micah Franklin 11-4, 8-11, 9-11, 11-3 and 11-7.

Nyron Joseph then sealed the win for the Guyanese as he defeated John Fletcher 3-11, 11-4, 13-11, 6-11 and 11-7. With the matchup already secured, Guyana lost the fifth round as Patrick Foster defeated Richard Chin via walkover.

In the veterans section, Guyana remained winless in the tournament as they went down to Bermuda by a 3-2 margin.

The Guyanese got off to the worst possible start as Eugene Bothello won the Men’s 50+ matchup via walkover. The Bermudians then took a 2-0 lead as Jane Chapman overcame Zanilta Disalle 4-11, 7-11, 11-2, 11-2 and 13-11 in their Women 40+ fixture.

Guyana eventually pulled one back as Ramon Chan-A-Sue downed Spencer Moss 11-3, 11-6 and 11-5 in their Men’s 40+ affair. Nonetheless, Bermuda would seal the win in the next round as Denise Kyme won via walkover in the Women’s 50+ affair.

Guyana ended the five-round affair on a high as Alwyn Callender defeated Tony Prentice 6-11, 11-13, 13-11, 11-3 and 11-9. Up to press time, the Guyana Men and Female teams were contesting their semi-final fixtures against Trinidad and Tobago respectively.
